About Us

The Francis Kitchen was inspired by pay-what-you-can nonprofit restaurants like the JBJ Soul Kitchen in New Jersey and A Place at the Table in North Carolina—places that believe everyone deserves a good meal and a seat at the table.

Founded in Charlottesville, Virginia, The Francis Kitchen is a brand-new nonprofit with a simple but powerful mission: to serve nourishing food with dignity, love, and respect. We believe that access to healthy, thoughtfully prepared meals should never depend on a person’s income, background, or circumstances.

At The Francis Kitchen, guests are welcomed just as they are. Those who can pay do so, those who can give a little give a little, and those who cannot pay at all are still invited to eat—no questions asked. Our model is rooted in trust, community, and the belief that shared meals can break down barriers and build connection.

Guided by a dedicated Board of Directors made up of five committed community members, The Francis Kitchen is grounded in strong leadership, accountability, and a shared vision for a more just and compassionate food system in Charlottesville. Our board helps steward the mission, ensure sustainability, and keep our values at the center of everything we do.

More than a restaurant, The Francis Kitchen is a place of belonging—and it’s made possible by volunteers. We are actively recruiting volunteers to help with day-to-day work, including food preparation, serving guests, cleaning, and behind-the-scenes support. Whether you can offer a few hours or a regular commitment, your time and care help make this kitchen a place where dignity and love are served daily.
